The location was in Washington DC
The "Take It!" came from this rare moment on a beautiful day when all the rental bicycles were in the rack waiting to be taken out for a spin. These rental bikes have become a huge part of
the city as of the last few years. It has been found that young people of which there are a growing number in DC would rather ride a bike than take public transportation. It must be
quickly said that not all that use the bikes are young. I have seen some gray haired folks out there on them moving about. It is also becoming a fact that many young people who are in the
work force would rather own a bike than a car. The ownership of a car as a symbol of coming of age is no longer as valid as it used to be. Many young people have a driver's licence but
only use it for an ID or for an occasional rental of a car. Here too, we have cars that can be rented by the hour from several different agencies that are not the big names.
Public transportation is used by a steadily growing number in this area that are getting out of cars for longer commutes.
The After Take: These bicycles would all be gone later in the day as the day of the photo was a Saturday and the time, just a little early. All who looked at the photo liked it as
being representative of what is the trend for this segment of our population. Nothing was lost in that I had caught that rare moment when all slots were filled, in waiting.
By the way, the city is making more dedicated bike lanes in the public streets. It is working out amazingly well. For the most part, the users of these bikes are cautious and risk
adverse, in contrast to what is a disappearing set of bicycle messengers who have been mainly replaced with communication technology advances.
I plan to get a bike later this spring and put it to use. It has been a lot of years since I owned one. I look forward to many enjoyable hours riding it in this scenic location.
Wishing you all the best,
