The Great Divide

12/18/12 -101-

The photo was taken on October 20, 2012, at 11:44 am.

The location was in Crystal City, Virginia.

The "Take it!" came from having driven down one side of this road which had this run of decorative grass as a part of the median strip. I had been looking at it for several years and not really appreciated its softening effect on the many applications of concrete that surround it.

The After Take: This was just grand. It seemed everyone that I showed the picture to liked it and wanted to know where this strip of median was located. This seems to be a question that many people ask if I do not tell them the location as a part of my introduction of the photo when I show it to them via the monitor screen on the camera. I have never asked anyone later if they went and looked at the sites for themselves. I think it is just a desire to have a knowlege of that thing called a "sense of place."

This grass is trimmed back every year in the late fall to allow fresh growth in the spring which lasts through the late spring into mid to late November. When it gets trimmed it almost looks like it has one of those short military hair cuts and is quite neat and precise. When it has reached a certain length in the spring - it has a way of swaying as cars go by it in the close to it lanes. Again, all a well planned part of a very nice community.

Here is hoping there is a similar stretch or planted area of decorative grass somewhere near where you live, so you too can experience the subtle drive by soothing offered by this bit of nature.

Thanks for joining us for the current photo presentation. You are cordially invited to return Friday, December 21st for a new picture that we hope you will enjoy.

Best wishes,

 Bruce

Hi Jeff: Thanks for the great question. We will follow our usual schedule for postings as have checked with an unreliable source and found that the end of the world has been outsourced. By the way, we are not recommending for anyone to invest in the new North Korean satellite communication system, it is just too shaky at this point in its development.

I would be so tempted to make a go at this with a weed whacker.
